How much does it cost to import a car from the USA?

Importing a car from the USA can be far cheaper than buying the same model in Europe — as long as you total every cost up front. The most common mistake is looking only at the auction price and forgetting the fees that stack up along the way.
We quote every car individually once you send a lot number or VIN, but below we break the final figure into its parts so you know what to expect.
1. Auction price and buyer's fee
The starting point is your winning bid on Copart, IAA or Manheim, plus the auction's buyer's fee. We bid on your behalf using our dealer licence, so you don't need your own account or registration fees — you set a price cap and we watch the auction.
2. US transport and ocean freight
After the win we collect the car by flatbed and take it to the port in New Jersey or Savannah. From there it sails — usually in a 40' container shared with 2–4 other cars. Container consolidation is safer and often more cost-effective than RoRo, and the ocean leg itself typically takes 3–5 weeks.
3. Customs duty, VAT and excise on arrival
Bringing the car into the EU customs territory adds public charges: customs duty (a standard 10% for passenger cars), 23% VAT, and excise, whose rate depends on engine size. We handle the full clearance, paperwork and translations, so you never have to deal with a customs office yourself.
4. Delivery and extra costs
Finally there's delivery to your address. Most Copart and IAA cars carry some damage — we help assess the extent, check the history (Carfax/AutoCheck), and after delivery arrange transport to a repair shop. Every car is secured professionally, with no shortcuts like hanging a vehicle by its suspension.

Can I know the exact cost before buying?+
Yes. Send the lot number or VIN, the auction source and your destination — we'll come back with a full quote covering transport, clearance and delivery.
Which is cheaper — container or RoRo?+
For a single car, 40' container consolidation is usually safer and price-competitive because the container cost splits across several vehicles. We advise the best option for your specific shipment.
Can I pay on arrival in Europe?+
Yes. A "buy in the USA, pay on arrival" arrangement is available once we agree terms. We usually take a deposit to start the process.
